Variability of upwelling and chlorophyll in the equatorial Atlantic

چکیده
Abstract The primary seasonal phytoplankton bloom in the equatorial Atlantic occurs in boreal summer in response to seasonal strengthening of zonal winds. However, the equatorial Atlantic also has a secondary bloom in late fall – early winter. This secondary bloom is weaker than the primary bloom by a factor of two, but is subject to year-to-year variability that is similar in magnitude. Here, observational evidence, including sea level and SeaWIFS-derived chlorophylla concentration, is used to examine several potential causes of this secondary bloom. The secondary bloom varies independently of blooms along the eastern coastal zones. Also, the secondary bloom has a relationship with the cessation of the Northwest African monsoon and the secondary seasonal strengthening of the trade winds in the equatorial Atlantic. The variability of the secondary bloom results from perturbations in the depth of the thermocline induced by zonal wind anomalies in the western tropical Atlantic. These wind anomalies are correlated with mean sea level atmospheric pressure anomalies in the region of the northern subtropical high as well as over the Amazon.

Sea Surface Carbon Dioxide off Iberian Peninsula (east North Atlantic Ocean)
The variability of the carbon dioxide in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean was investigated by studying three seasons with different hydrographical and meteorological conditions that lead to two main different situations: upwelling and downwelling. No correlation between surface pCO2 and chlorophyll was found in spring, although significant correlation was found in autumn when strong downwelling...
متن کاملTropical Atlantic variability in a coupled physical–biogeochemical ocean model
A three-dimensional ocean biogeochemical model of the tropical Atlantic Ocean was run for more than half a century (1949–2000) in order to characterize the ocean biogeochemical response to variable forcing over this period. The seasonal cycle in the equatorial upwelling zone agrees reasonably well with observations and other published simulations but underestimates phytoplankton biomass under s...
متن کاملSome Overlooked Features of Tropical Atlantic Climate Leading to a New Niño-Like Phenomenon*
The Atlantic Niño, an equatorial zonal mode akin to the Pacific El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), is phase-locked to boreal summer when the equatorial easterly winds intensify and the thermocline shoals in the Gulf of Guinea. A suite of satellite and in situ observations reveals a new mode of tropical Atlantic variability that displays many characteristics of the zonal mode but instead peaks...
متن کاملVariability of Air-Sea CO2 Fluxes and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Distribution in the Atlantic Basin: A Coupled Model Analysis
The biogeochemical dynamics of carbon in the ocean is a subject of fundamental interest to environmental studies. In this context, we have implemented a ten year run of the Brazilian Earth System Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Model (BESM-OA2.3) integrated with TOPAZ biogeochemical model for the Atlantic basin. The modeled ΔpCO2 for the tropical Atlantic shows very clearly a high dominance of positiv...
متن کاملBiogeochemical variability in the central equatorial Indian Ocean during the monsoon transition
In this paper we examine time-series measurements of near-surface chlorophyll concentration from a mooring that was deployed at 80.5E on the equator in the Indian Ocean in 2010. These data reveal at least six striking spikes in chlorophyll from October through December, at approximately 2-week intervals, that coincide with the development of the fall Wyrtki jets during the transition between th...
